Tom Weeklund

A native of Minneapolis, MN, I studied with several excellent private teachers including Herb Wigley. I was fortunate enough to have been coached on organ with the great jazz organist Jimmy Smith back in the 70’s. I have been a professional musician and teacher since 1964. I have been the accompanist at my church, a composer, a recording artist and play professionally in the Twin Cities area. I was the co-author, then author of a series of articles on blues and jazz improvisation in a national keyboard publication for several years.

Strengths:
My biggest strength is that I am out there performing, accompanying, teaching, composing, and doing things that I am able to pass on to my students. I am living the practical practice of music every day in my personal and professional life. This enhances my ability to be a better teacher and to pass on the true art of music.

Since 2001:
I have recorded 5 CDs including wedding music, spiritual music, solo jazz piano, Christmas music and a collection of original songs. Samples of these CD’s can be heard by clicking this link. I’ve written, recorded and performed songs for bridal couples on their wedding day,  given lecture demonstrations in various schools and music dealerships, recorded music for a series of radio and TV commercials, and created a tutorial video on jazz organ for the local cable station. In addition to my teaching schedule, I have been the keyboard accompanist at my church for the last 25 years, a composer, and I play professionally around the Twin Cities area.

For the past several years, I have been fortunate to work with junior and senior high school students in my area that are involved with their respective school jazz bands. I have helped them prepare for their auditions and their continuing education in the art of jazz improvisation; sometimes working with students competing for the same slot in their school bands.

A few years ago, I composed music for a Children’s Mass for two southern Minnesota private schools that my grandchildren attend. That music is still being used for their weekly services.
